The first and best place for snorkeling in Zanzibar is Chumbe Island one of the most spectacular garden to be found any where in the world,Chumbe is a Coral Park and best for snorkeling only,diving is not allowed here due to the fact that the corals are not so deep and can be easily damaged.
The reef crest encompassing a spectacular array of hard corals,is shallow(between 1-3m according to the tides),therefore Snorkelers can see all those wonder of the under waters world.If you are lucky you may get chance to see the playful Dolphins cruising in and out of abyss.Each Snorkeling excursion provides new discoveries for guest and with each visit younare unlikely to be disappointed!
The diversity of Fishes is unbelievable and their tameness very natural to watch out for:-
*Lobster peeping out from under coral,trying to investigate your presence with their long white feelers.
*Large blue spotted String rays,apparently believing they are invisible when hiding a thin layer of sand.
*Bat fish who have developed the habiit of following snorkelers at close range all along the reef (out of Curiosity)
*Resident hawks bills Turtles,regularly spotted feeding on the reef.If you imitate the flapping movement of her front flippers with your arms while keeping your legs still,she may allow you to accompany her for a long time without showing disturbance.
*Nearly more than 400 Species in total like,Colourfull parrot,Oscar,Box fish,Trumpet fish,Star fish,Lion fish,Moorish idols,Butterfly fish,Trigger fish,Sweet lips,Groupers,Angel fish,Unicorn fish,etc

*HISTORICAL MONUMENTS: You can climb 131 steps to the top of the Chumbe Light House built in 1904 by the Sultan of the Zanzibar an the British.The light House was fitted with a gas light in 1926 which still work to day.
*NATURE TRAILS:While the tide is very low it`s possible to walk all the ways around Island exploring the Rock pools where Juvenile Fish and a myriad of Crabs,Shell fish,Star fish,Oyster
*FOREST RESERVE: You may watch 64 species including the mangrove and pied King fingers-Halcyon senegaloides and Ceryle rudis,Fish Eagle-Haliacetus vocife and Peregrine Falcon-Falco peregrimis,the Hermit Crabs,Rare giant coconut Crab,The exceptionally shy Ader`s Duikers-Cephalo plus odersi.

Mnemba Island is a popular snorkeling and Scuba diving site with a wide variety of corals and associated sighting of larger species such as Dolphins and Turtles,Turtles normally can be seen by scuba diving,and people make snorkeling around 200m zone from the Island and the Island is for private people( Guests)

We were staying on the East coast of Zanzibar Island. We were taken on snorkelling tours with a fantastic young tour guide called Nic. He suggested and took us to the beautiful Mnembe Island and Blue Lagoon. Both of which were beautiful and highly recommended. His local knowledge and personal attention was awesome. He was in the water snorkelling with us, showing us many interesting things and taking us to the best reefs, whilst still giving us space to explore the reefs ourselves. What made his snorkelling trips so much better than all the other tour guide companies is that there was no time limit to the length of time we wished to snorkel. He arranged everything, from fetching us at our hotel, taking us snorkelling to organizing a delicious fruit lunch on a beautiful paradise sandbar in the middle of the ocean. He is a super friendly, well-spoken and highly knowledgeable local young guy. He goes out of his way to tailor make your dream trip at very reasonable prices. I can highly recommend his services. ReplyDeleteFirstly, I just send my thanks for our tour guide(NICO) for showing us the beauties of zanzibar,we were very happy to make snorkeling at Chumbe Island .For sure we have seen what nicolas explained on his blogs,we have seen several fishes during our Snorkeling trip to Chumbe Island like string rays,lobsters,parrot fish,trumpet fish,butterfly fish,what made me so satisfied when i was swimming with marine tortoise very close.I recommend for this guy.
